How does Choice determine the recommended product?

When helping consumers compare toilet paper (or any other product), CHOICE performs a series of rigorous and scientific tests on the products at hand. When the test data has been collected, CHOICE identifies the product which represents the best value for Australian consumers.

Where does CHOICE testing occur?

All product testing carried out by CHOICE occurs at laboratories accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA). Using these specialised laboratory locations ensures that all products are tested to a wide range of standards with only the best, most trustworthy equipment.

How are toilet paper brands tested by CHOICE?

In order to accurately assess the quality of the nominated toilet paper brands, CHOICE employs expert testers. In addition to their testing work these expert technical specialists also sit on several standards committees for Standards Australia. This ensures that the Australian consumer and their needs are front of mind during the testing process. Toiler papers are scored based on their performance across a variety of tests including:

• Separation ease - How easy is it to separate the toilet paper at the point of perforation? Toilet papers that tear easily will score higher.
• Puncture strength - How strong is the toilet paper? Ply count, wet strength and materials used can impact this. Toilet paper which can demonstrate a significant resistance to puncturing will score highly on this metric.
• Disintegration time - How fast does this toilet paper disintegrate? Nobody wants their toilet paper to block their plumbing system or damage their septic systems. Toilet paper with a faster disintegration time will score well on this measurement.
• Softness - No toilet paper test would be complete without a thorough review of how soft the rolls are. Ultra soft rolls with more layers tend to score higher on the softness test, but this can also depend on which materials have been used.

Each product tested by CHOICE is given a CHOICE expert rating. The product with the highest overall score for their CHOICE expert rating is deemed the winning product.
